WILDFIRE
ROYAL NAVY LAND BASE AT SHEERNESS.

Established in 1889 HMS Wildfire was a Royal Navy shore base at Sheerness, on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent, England. It closed in 1933 but with the threat of war was re-commissioned on the 16 February 1937.

Wren Jean Cudmore, stationed at Wildfire, Sheerness.

Wilfred George Williams a the Royal Navy Shore Base, HMS Wildfire.

A Dutch engraving by Willem Schellinks showing the storming of Sheppey by the Dutch

In 1665 King Henry VIII ordered the first Royal Navy dockyard and fort to be built at Sheerness to protect the River Medway from invasion by the French. The Navy Board wanted a dockyard where “warships might be provisioned and repaired”.

Following the Dutch attack in 1667, when they captured British ships in the Medway, attacked and captured the Royal Navy Dockyard at Sheerness the fortifications protecting the dockyard were strengthened. These included the Garrison Fort, the Moat around the Royal Naval Dockyards (Sheerness Lines) and later the Military Canal (Queenborough Lines) which both protected the Royal Naval Dockyard and the Royal Navy Base from attack from landward.

In January 1943 HMS Derwent was an escort for a military convoy through the Red Sea and Indian Ocean taking the ANZAC 9th Division back to Australia after being recalled for defence of Australia.

In March 1943 HMS Derwent joined the 22nd Destroyer Flotilla, Mediterranean Fleet, at Alexandria, Egypt.

On the 19th March 1943, while anchored in Tripoli Harbour, HMS Derwent came under heavy air attack.

Enemy aircraft dropped “pattern running” torpedoes. These torpedoes have a preset program allowing the torpedo to make a straight run towards its target, such as a convoy or ships at anchor and then execute a pattern of ever-increasing circles until it hits a target or runs out of fuel.

During this attack, three vessels were hit. The freighters Ocean Voyager and Vavara were both sunk and HMS Derwent sustained major damage with 6 dead. She was beached to save her from sinking.

The Derwent would not be repaired before the end of the war and her crew were transferred to other ships.

Wilfred would see the end of the war at the Royal Navy establishment, Camp Diyatalawa and HMS Lanka in Ceylon, Sri Lanka.

Wilfred would serve in the Roay Navy for almost a year after the end of the war before being discharged on the 15 June 1945.

OPERATION LUCID

Following Dunkirk, in preparation for the German invasion of England, landing barges began to build up in the channel ports of German occupied Europe.

Mimicking Sir Francis Drake's attack on the Spanish Armada, Operation Lucid was planned to send fire ships in amongst the German invasion barges.

At Sheerness, an old tanker was being prepared as a fire ship. She was loaded with petrol and explosives and would be positioned at the entrance of Calais where an on-shore wind would let her drift in amongst the barges. On the first attempt the Fire ship fouled the Thames Estuary Boom and was forced to return to Sheerness. On the next attempt the operation was aborted when one of her escorts the Destroyer VENETIA on the 19th Oct, 1940 detonated a mine and sunk with the loss of 34 of her crew.

On the third and final attempt the Calais defenses had been alerted by a failed diversionary air raid and the Fire ship and escorts were illuminated by search lights from the shore. With the element of surprise gone Operation Lucid was abandoned.

September 1939 to December 1940.  In the early part of the war everything depended on the constant flow of convoys. The Germans did their very best to stop this flow with over 249 British and Allied ships being sunk in the Nore Command during that period. Mines sunk more ships on the East coast  than enemy guns, torpedoes and bombs together. Of the 249 ships sunk,179 were sunk by mines.

July 1940. The first Flotilla of HDML's (Harbour Defence Motor Launche's) was formed at Sheerness to patrol the Thames Estuary.

For much of the war at least three convoys a week would be heading south into the Thames Estuary and a further three heading north.  Pinned in by sand banks and the mine barrier they were only two ships wide and perhaps eight or nine miles long. Their would never be enough escorts and Wildfire ships would always be hard pressed.

WILFRED GEORGE WILLIAMS

Thank you to Rhys Williams for sending us the following information about his Dad who served at HMS Wildfire, Sheerness.

When he was only 17 years old, Wilfred George Williams served at the Royal Navy Shore Base, HMS Wildfire (Isle of Sheppey, Sheerness, Kent) before the commencement of World War Two.

From HMS Wildfire, Wilfred would go on to undertake further training at HMS Drake and HMS Defiance at Devonport.

On the 1st of May 1941 Wilfred was transferred to HMS Derwent a Type III, Hunt-class Escort Destroyer. Wilfred was on the Derwent when she was commissioned and undertook her sea trials.

In August 1942 HMS Derwent took part in Operation Pedestal, escorting convoy WS21S to Malta.

This convoy was of critical importance. Malta was a base from which British ships, submarines and aircraft attacked German convoys to North African. Malta was under siege by German and Italian forces, but continued to resist. Malta urgently needed supplies, especially fuel.

During the operation more than 500 Merchant and Royal Navy sailors and airmen were killed and only five of the 14 merchant ships reached Grand Harbour at Malta. Most important of these ships was the Fuel Tanker Ohio, which arrived strapped between two destroyers to stop her from sinking. The Ohio carried a cargo of aviation fuel, this and Supermarine Spitfires flown from the aircraft-carrier HMS Furious, enabled Malta to continue the war against enemy shipping

On the 13th August HMS Derwent was detached from the convoy with the Destroyers HMS Bicester and HMS Wilton to escort for the Light-Cruiser HMS Nigeria back to Gibraltar. The Nigeria had been severely damaged by a torpedo and the Aircraft Carrier HMS Eagle sunk with the loss of 131 of her crew.
